I'm going to throw in my two cents by saying that Google's not at fault for displaying duplicate content as their ultimate goal is to send users to THE MOST relevant page, not to discern whether or not the site is a carbon copy of another, just what is the most relevant... Because in all truth, they are two different sites (even if the changes are minor.)

Think about your default wordpress install, many people use just the default install (with default template) and post a few things. Based off of what you're saying, a default wordpress installation should in the eyes of Google (and given a few slight changes), be considered a hijacked site.

Consider the fact that this article itself is probably reproduced in several different places across the internet. Now think about who sees these articles: Your visitors, their visitors, and other spiders. Visitors also create content like articles and comments. Google sees this and doesn't care if the article originated from one place or another, just what is more relevant to a user's search. There are, of course, other factors as well but that's really the gist of what I wanted to say..

Grr, code was stripped from the preg_match and should be like this.
preg_match('#<POPULARITY URL="(.*?)" TEXT="([0-9]+){1,}"/>#si', getPage('http://data.alexa.com/data?cli=10&dat=s&url='.$url['host']), $p);

I have revised the code a bit to make it a tiny bit faster although you should probably cache the results so you do not get banned by alexa for to many queries against them. Also Mr Bill, the code worked just fine except for a few single and double quotes that had been converted by whatever editor was being used. Either that or it was intentionally done to stop copy pasta.
<?php
function getPage($url) {
  if (function_exists('curl_init')) {
    $ch = curl_init($url);
    curl_setopt($ch, CURLOPT_RETURNTRANSFER, true);
    curl_setopt($ch, CURLOPT_FOLLOWLOCATION, true);
    curl_setopt($ch, CURLOPT_USERAGENT, $_SERVER['HTTP_USER_AGENT']);
    return curl_exec($ch);
  } else {
    return file_get_contents($url);
  }
}

function getAlexaRank($url) {
  $url = @parse_url($url);
  preg_match('##si', getPage('http://data.alexa.com/data?cli=10&dat=s&url='.$url['host']), $p);
  return (empty($p[2])) ? 0 : number_format($p[2]);
}
echo getAlexaRank($_GET['url']);

This is one of many incidents I have heard of with Google. To answer the question "Is Google Safe?" No! Not at all. They take your content and use it for advertising and for their own gain. For instance you may want to look at a post on my blog http://blog.asylum-et.com/2008/03/30/speaking-out-against-a-giant/
The post is discussing an issue we had recently with our Adsense account. Due to the outright theft on their part we decided to discontinue our use of Adsense even though they reinstated our account with apologies. Now if you look into how you are to go about not using Adsense they do not offer such a thing as removing your account. No, rather they offer for you to remove all of the Ad code from your sites and that is it.

Well now that does not help since the cache in Google still has your content and oh would you want to take a guess what is in that cache of your content? Yep you guessed it, adsense ads. Now who gets paid for the clicks on the Ads when you will likely never check your account again?
Google is silently planning to make all websites un-needed since the user will only have to browse Google and never even hit your website.

What is even more scary is the fact that they are working themselves into a position for global dominance. Call me crazy but if you think about it they seem to have their hands in every pot, they have offended the US gov with their google earth and what it revealed. The US gov would probably have just bought them out if they could afford it but I think it is safe to say that Google has more money than them so that wont happen.

Sorry, ranting but the power they have scares the heck out of me.

My advise. Buy your own domain name, find a good host, use your own email server. i.e. yourname@yourdomain.com You can forward the email through something like gmail or yahoo but your messages will be on your own computer since you will use something like Outlook to download them. That way nobody has power over you and your information like this.

Never give this type of power to someone especially when they are a search engine who rather than focusing on making search more relevant they focus on making search more profitable for them as well as trying to corner every other market. Google is a joke, use yahoo, msn or any other and show Google you wont take their BS. Back in the day they called it Boycott. Do it, love it, watch Google fall.

Best wishes to you Subikar.
